The Webster Technique is a safe and gentle technique used to address both neurobiomechanical and physiological aspects of the pelvis, to assist pregnant women to prepare for a safer and easier labour and birth. Assessing and addressing common causes of dystocia, with the goal of a smoother and more effortless labour and birth.
Dystocia is defined as; Difficult birth, typically caused by a large or awkwardly positioned foetus, by smallness of the maternal pelvis, or by failure of the uterus and cervix to contract and expand normally’.
· A Chiropractor assesses alignment and pelvic position, making gently corrections to improve biomechanics and allow for ideal alignment and optimal space.
· Sacral movement and posture cause tension at the anchoring ligaments (broad, round, uterosacral) which can impact baby positioning. Antenatal chiropractic addresses joint positioning as well as muscular and ligament strain.
· Uterine dysfunction and inadequate voluntary muscle effort during active stage of labour. This is related to nerve innervation and supply, with sympathetic drive from lower thoracic spine and parasympathetic innervation from S2 and S3. Chiropractors address neural interference.
Hormonal (relaxin) surges, in particularly during the second and third trimester, result in ligament laxity. This is to allow the pelvis to broaden and make space for the growing baby, however, can result in joint instability.
A shift in centre of gravity, caused by mums growing belly, alters the distribution of weight and force throughout the joint, muscles, ligaments and surrounding supportive structures.
Changes in gait (walking posture) and increased biomechanical loads cause increase pressure and strain through associated joints, ligaments and muscles.
The resulting overactive or tenses muscles and ligaments and their subsequent impact on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for labour and birth. A Webster practitioners’ goal is to minimise any undue strain and tension through these associated muscles, joints and ligaments, to ensure optimal pelvic position and encourage improved fetal positioning. This is achieved through a range of gentle soft tissue techniques and joint mobilisation. Your chiropractor will discuss a course of treatment that best suits your presentation and will work with you closely to tailor a program that combines hands of treatment as well as at home exercises and advice.
Whether you are suffering from typical pregnancy associated symptoms such a pelvic girdle pain, round ligament pain, pubic symphysis pain and dysfunction, low back pain, headaches etc. or you are wanting to support yourself through your ideal birth, an antenatal chiropractor is for you.
